There is only one T. Graham Brown; and that uniqueness has made him one of the most enduring popular singers in Nashville.
Five years since his last album Wine Into Water, T. Graham Brown continues to be in demand as a national concert attraction, a songwriter and a studio singer. Once you have heard his drenched-in- emotion voice, you dont forget it---and neither have the thousands who still pack his show each year.
For them, and for lovers of the great blue-eyed soul singing everywhere, the gifted Brown returns to disc with his latest recording The Next Right Thing. T. Graham Brown, who has had 21 charted songs that has netted 11 top ten and three number one songs, is in rare form in this project. His gritty traditional country melded with blues sound is highlighted by guest appearances from George Jones, Bekka Bramlett, and Michael McDonald. This album is a true testament to an artist who has the distinction of sounding like no one else.
Anthony Graham Brown had been performing for nearly a decade in country and soul bands in his native Georgia when he arrived in Nashville in 1982. His one-of-kind voice and wide-open friendliness attracted attention immediately.
He started his Music Row career as a studio singer making demonstration tapes. But within two years he was signed to Capitol Records. He was catapulted into the country top-10 in 1985. During the next five years Brown ruled the upper reaches of the charts with a dozen hit singles, including such memorable efforts as I Tell It Like It Used To Be, Darlene, Come As You Were, If You Could See Me Now and his award nominated 1990 duet with Tanya Tucker Dont Go Out
The 1986 hit Hell And High Water was named Country Single of the Year by Cash Box magazine. The video for 1987s Brilliant Conversationalist cracked the VH-1 hit parade. Dock of the Bay became a hit in Germany and Rock It, Billy was a success in England. Brown became a Country Music Association award nominee in 1987 and 1989. In 1998 Brown was also critically acclaimed for his album Wine Into Water, whose title track is a musical epilogue to dealing with alcoholism.
His career expanded rapidly into other arenas. As an actor he landed roles in the Richard Pryor race-car movie Greased Lightning, the John Schneider science-fiction feature The Curse and the David Keith film about Elvis, Heartbreak Hotel. He was also heard on the soundtrack of the German Action movie Zabou and performed as its overseas premiere.
Back on the home front, T. Graham Brown has become an in-demand jingle singer for dozens of national products, including Coke, Mountain Dew, Budweiser Beer, Ford, Chevy, Hardees, McDonalds, Harrods Casino, Taco Bell, and many, many more. In the 1990s he not only sang the jingles for Taco Bell but he starred in its widely seen Run For the Border TV spots as well.
After Brown and Capitol parted ways in 1992 he spent two years at Warner Bros. and two years at Columbia Records. These were frustrating times for the singer, since neither label issued an album by him. Music fans never abandoned him, however, and he continued to perform more than 100 shows a year on the road.
In 1994 T. Graham Brown overcame an alcohol problem that had dogged him throughout most of his stardom. He says he achieved that victory as a result of his love for his son Acme and his wife Shelia. As a therapeutic exercise he co-wrote Wine Into Water, the moving title track of his last album.
It sat on the shelf for three years because I was ashamed to sing it, he recalls. I was worried about what mama and daddy would think. But the first time I sang it live, I got a standing ovation at the first chorus. And then that night it started --- at the autograph table people were walking up to me crying and telling me about their daddy, brother, uncle, sister cousin. I knew Id touched a nerve. So every night telling my story and then Id sing the song.
Everywhere I sing it, people spontaneously stand up. I sang it on the televised portion of the Grand Ole Opry; and bunches of people started telling me theyd taped it and played it for their loved ones who had been battling alcohol. This song has taken on a life of its own. And its the song that got me my last record deal at Intersound. This song is so amazing that Intersound has included and new mix of this song on his latest album The Next Right Thing.
Now The Next Right Thing is proving itself to be a real career record in every sense of the term. This album is stockpiled with the kind of songwriting has been the signature of the T. Graham Brown sound. His first single Which Way To Pray is a powerful song deals with abuse and forgiveness. This situation happened to someone near and dear to me, T. Graham Brown said. I wrote this song because I believed in this song and it hit close to home. And this is the key to Browns longevity; singing real and meaningful songs with raw from-the-heart emotion. That formula has created yet another T. Graham Brown success.
