It’s a mystery
Where we all come from
I’d like to share a little piece of my story
Hope you don’t mind if I open up

I never knew my father
Was so strong
I never knew my father
Put right so much wrong

Teaching me all about
Love and forgiveness and letting go of selfish pride
I didn’t I know then
Just how much it all meant
Until now I can see just how right
My father was

I never knew my pa
Not to talk with a southern drawl
I never knew my pa
To ever say much at all

Unless he was laughin’ and jokin’
But like when he quit smokin’
Once he made up his mind it was set
I didn’t always agree or take him seriously
When he’d call me out but I won’t forget
My father’s words

I never knew my daddy
Had to carry so much
I never knew my daddy
To ever give up

He worked hard everyday
And he’d never complain
He’d tell me always do my best and to try
I never knew my daddy
held so much inside
Mmhmmm

And here is this man I’ve come to know
So many lessons I’ve learned about letting go
He came through a lot, walked away from of his fight
I’m seeing everything now in a different light
If we give what we can
Appreciate all we have
Just like my daddy
We might start livin’ right

Now I know my father
Said I know my father
Couldn’t have
A more grateful daughter
