My kids are older now, and I’m finding that in many ways it’s actually harder to parent, because what I need to do is sit on my hands, listen more, and let my kids figure things out. It is so gratifying to watch them go out into the world and become themselves, but it is also bittersweet to know that the best thing you can do for them is to make yourself obsolete (“You can fall apart without me/You can heal your heart without me/You can make a new start without me/That’s how it should be”).
