I wanted to capture what it feels like to be the person initiating the breakup and how it’s possible to feel sadness, guilt, and regret while also knowing perfectly well that there is zero possibility of saving the relationship (“Got a ghost of a thorn in the palm of your hand/Touch the part that’s tender/Can’t help but remember/How he looked when you told him that it wasn’t working out like you’d planned/that your love felt worn/like the ghost of a thorn”).
