Broken Promise Land
Broken Promise Land
(Seth Jackson/Chip Martin)

Sun struggles to rise over the city haze
As he heads off to work for minimum wage
By the time he makes it home 8, his kids will be asleep
It wasn't like this till they shipped his old job overseas

And he pledges his allegiance
And he bleeds red white and blue
But the dream he once believed in
Just ain't coming true
As we watch our firm foundation turn into shifting sand
Here in broken promise land

The rich don't pay and the banks can't fail
Only the poor go to jail
Kid walks home from school afraid of the police
While his mama prays that he don't end up face down in the street

And she pledges her allegiance
And she bleeds red white and blue
But the dream she once believed in
Just ain't coming true
As we watch our firm foundation turn into shifting sand
Here in broken promise land

Working class ain't got no Super PAC
But if 100 million voices speak they can't ignore that

So we pledge our allegiance
And we bleed red white and blue
And the dream we still believe in
Has a shot at coming true
As we watch our firm foundation turn into shifting sand
Here in broken promise land
