The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 culminated in the largest mass execution in U.S. history of 38 Dakota in Minnesota and, in 1865, Medicine Bottle’s and Little Six’s capture and hangings. I was very honored that Medicine Bottle’s great-great grandson, filmmaker Sheldon Wolfchild, included this song in his documentary about the Dakota people titled "The Indian System."
