Worried
This is about as close as I’ve come to writing anything political. But it’s more about valuing basic human decency and holding myself accountable instead of judging anyone else’s behavior. I’m the only person who has to live with me. But it was the current, toxic political environment that brought me the song idea. For those reasons I feel this is one of my most personal songs – what you hear is what you get with me.
I had been playing this for a month or two just solo acoustic, almost a ballad. When I asked my guitarist friend Michael Brinson to record it with me, we found that the song wanted to have that big, crunchy guitar sound. It headed down a path I wasn’t expecting – a rock song. And I loved that energy and how we added new textures with different guitars, and with some keyboard parts. Now, I still play it on the acoustic solo, and it feels like two completely different songs.
