Gravel & Dirt
At an event or a party somewhere, I overheard someone say that they lived on the corner of gravel and dirt. Those kinds of southernisms stick with me. I love the southern voice, y’all – white, black, Native-American – southeastern, the deep south, and the great southwest – all those accents and flavors. And all those quirky expressions. I’ll often hear something then make a quick note. All writers do it. In fact we ALL DO IT; somebody says something we like, and we’ll probably look for an opportunity to say it too. You need to be careful what you say around a songwriter. I took the concept and built a simple story around it. No deep meaning or hidden message. Just, some people change across their lifetimes. And I guess other people don’t change. I know a few things about life’s dead-ends and blind curves. The music needed to be a bit gritty, to have a little dirt on it. The studio where most of this was recorded was really very untidy and grimy – perfect.
