I thought family was a house made of stone
Until the wind blew away all I had known
I told the truth to be set free
It knocked the breath right out of me
Mama said she’ll never understand
I still hadn’t met the right man
Daddy said don’t bother coming home
Unless you plan to come alone
I keep driving by that billboard sign on I-75
It says Jesus saves, right there in black and white
Does it really matter who is right?
I spent my youth sitting in the front church pew
To hear a Southern Baptist preacher’s great good news
Last I heard, he’d fallen from grace
Affairs and alcohol became his faith
There I was, praying for my salvation
A castaway for my abominations
Even though I’ve always been the same
The color of my eyes will never change
Chorus
I thank God for the Mourning dove
Blood isn’t always thicker than love
I thank God for time and evolution
And for a softened heart of resolution
[Instrumental]
Chorus (Instrumental)
