Stephanie Sammons - Lazarus
3. Lazarus
This song was inspired by the book “Bittersweet” by Susan Cain. In the book, Cain shares that the “Garden of Eden,” where everything is perfect, complete, and whole, is the root of human longing and suffering. The idea that we will always be in a state of longing really stuck with me.
I wrote this song right around the time of the Uvalde school shooting in Texas. I felt guilty that I was living a pretty comfortable, normal life, yet I desperately wanted to do something to stop the madness and pain happening around me. Lazarus represents that longing.
