The Pie Chart of Love is the debut album from RubyJoyful. The band formed officially in 2022, founded by guitarist/vocalist Dan Rubinoff and bassist Joice Moore to showcase their original music inspired by their passion for folk, bluegrass, and Americana music and their love for each other. It began with an extraordinarily beautiful romance in the mountains of Colorado, filled with amorous letter writing and heartfelt works of art, including Dan’s first large canvas, after which the album is named. It led to the writing of some of the sweetest new songs heard this side of the Rockies.
Rubinoff jokes that it took him 50 years to write a good song, but once he did, they kept coming. These twelve original tunes tell the universal story of love, yet each one embodies the personal, unique experience of Joice and Dan’s partnership. However gracefully first created on Dan’s Martin HD-28, the songs were truly brought to life by the stunning musicianship of RubyJoyful’s members and contributors: the father/son duo of guitarist Eli Emmitt and mandolinist extraordinaire Drew Emmitt, banjo aficionado Andy Thorn, fiddle master Stuart Duncan, Rob Ickes and Scotty Sanders on Dobro, drummer David Alderdice, percussionist Eric Darken, Michael Webb on piano, and Justin Schipper on pedal steel. Joice Moore, Chris Donahue, and Steven Vidamour contributed on upright bass, with Laura Donahue, Chris Roberts, and Abby Siler providing additional vocals. Our friend, esteemed engineer and co-producer Marc Meeker put it all together.
“Drew turned this whole project from a basement experiment into an extraordinary piece of art, and Marc made the music in Dan’s head come to life in the most professional way,” Dan says. Rubinoff, a Pittsburgh native who moved to Colorado for college and never left, built a career as an educator, outdoor guide and avalanche dog trainer, along with his musical pursuits. Moore, who relocated from Albuquerque to join him there seven years ago, established and runs the nonprofit Healthy Families Colorado. They’re reveling in creating the second chapter of their lives together.
Americana Highways premiered the debut single. "An easy tempo mandolin, stringed bass, fiddle and guitars create an air of gentle grieving and the need to be positive when things are quite bleak. 'Freedom left the house this morning… place your bets up on the table, take your chances with your sins, the odds are stacked against your favor, but I got ’10 to 1′ love wins.' Shiny strings stand out in the music even when they’re covering a gloomy topic." See the full premiere at https://americanahighways.org/2024/04/10/song-premiere-ruby-joyful-10-1/
