Roy McMillan & the High Country Boys hailed from the Winston-Salem area of North Carolina.
High Country is the first of three albums recorded for Rebel in the early '70s. The group had a traditional high-lonesome sound yet their repertoire was built from original compositions mostly penned by Roy McMillan. Roy was a prolific songwriter and his songs have been covered by a number of Bluegrass artists. McMillan's song "Wandering in the Darkness" was later the lead cut on the Lonesome River Band's 1996 album
One Step Forward. The song was nominated for the IBMA Song of the Year award. Ralph Stanley recorded McMillan's song "Mountain Folks" and Big Country Bluegrass recorded "Up In The High Country" to name a few.
