Henry Spaulding recorded Cairo Blues in 1929, a unique song in all the Blues literature. Its history reads like a secret society upwelling from within the heart of the blues community: Henry Stuckey, Clifford Gibson, Henry Townsend and Lil Hardin all did versions of it. Roman blends it here with a completely different song of the same name, about the same hard luck southern Illinois town, recorded a generation later by Lil’ Son Jackson. This is an important song.
