Note from Andy Cohen: This version is informed by Roman’s lifelong study of Mississippi Fred McDowell’s singular style. Roman says his arrangement ‘functions out of a modified modal tuning and splinters off into that old gambling number ’Jack of Diamonds’ with various verses lifted from Charlie Poole and Big Joe Williams.’ For what it’s worth, Roman turned twenty while making this recording.
