My Last Goodbye (8 of 52)
My Last Goodbye
Rocky Alvey © 2007
I’m writing you this letter, from the east side of St. Louis
Though I can’t see the river from my room
It’s just a place to lay my head, 4 walls, TV and single bed
For what they charge you’d think I’d have a view
I’m working at the diner, just around the corner
The tips aren’t great but I can eat for free
Today I waited on someone, who smiled and asked where I was from
I turned my head and hoped he couldn’t see
What his simple question did to me
I received your letter, postmarked east St Louis
It laid here on the table for 3 days
This morning I haven’t done a thing but sit here on the back porch swing
Thinking about all you’ve had to say
I went to get my jacket and a box fell from the closet
It had pictures of our trip to Tennessee
You know I never will forget how both of us got soaking wet
We tried to dunk each other in a stream
I can’t tell you what that picture did to me
Chorus
Forgive me for not saying this in person
It’s something I can’t find the strength to do
It’s not that I don’t love you still, it’s just that I don’t have the will
to chase another dream that won’t come true
So this will be my last goodbye, to you
Female
I’ve held the phone for hours, I’ve often dialed your number
But I hang up just before the calls go through
I promised I would stay in touch but I haven’t been quite strong enough
To hear your voice and let you know the truth
And for me to say that last goodbye to you
I went down to Union Station and bought a one-way ticket
I’ll keep it with me for a week or two
I hope like hell you write again, but if there’s no response by then
I’ll have the final word on what to do
I’ll know this is my last goodbye to you
Chorus
Forgive me for not saying this in person
It’s something that is so long overdue
Though you’re gone I love you still and please believe I always will
I hope that every dream you have comes true
If this is my last goodbye to you
I’m writing you this letter
I received your letter
from the east side of St. Louis
Postmarked East St. Louis
Though I can’t see the river from my room
