Rivers and Trails
Rivers and trails I have traveled Forests I have wondered
And all of the ancient things that I have sat and pondered
They add to my life time give me meaning to this time line
And help me to understand who I am and where’s my home

I have fished the great blue waters and rode the raging rivers
Been lost in the north woods and I’ve always felt at home
From the south rim of the canyon I looked down on an eagle
Carved my name in a snow field high above the timber line

And the whisper of the west wind and a gentle spring shower
The silence of a snowfall helped me write this song
And the sites that I have seen as I have traveled this great country
Are things that should be shared for the joy of one and all

Faded footprints in the sand the outline of a human hand
Remind me and I understand that I am not alone
People passed this way before maybe looking for an open door
Different worlds to explore a glimpse of a different time

In my minds eye things appear the way it might have once been here
The story becomes a bit more clear adding treasures to my life
Found along some waterway, a lane or trail to yesterday
I will take with me today a different piece of time

Vistas across the promise land mountain peaks and desert sands
Water crashing on the strand they are joined some way
From the railroads to the blue highways Most all started out one day
As a path or trail along a waterway some traveled yet today

Rivers and trails make connections to places and directions
They can take us far away and bring us home again
And when my life is over I hope there will still be places
Connected by the rivers and the trails I traveled in my day

I have felt my heart aching At the sight of a tree trunks breaking
From the push of a dozer making way for more paving
And when my life is over I hope there will be places
Still connected by the rivers and the trails of our time
