Ring In The Old
On this chilly winter evenin’
Put my feet up by the fire
Make a list of all my blessings
‘Fore the old year does expire
It’s a melancholy feelin’
When the old year says goodbye
So I raise a glass and make a toast
And think of them and smile
I know that life keeps livin’
And I’ll let some new dreams in
But to brush aside the others
Would be more than just a sin
So tonight within my reverie
In the darkness all alone
Gonna have an intimate party
With some friends from long ago
Hello, Mr. and Mrs. B
Won’t you come in and sit awhile with me
And Mrs. B, bring some recipes
For one who needs some
And Mr. B, have a glass of wine
I think you deserve one
And celebrate the times
When they were good
And commiserate over wistful things
Like shoulds
And we’ll clink our glasses together
Before the candle flickers out
‘Fore you have to put your coats on
And begin the journey out
Heaven knows that I will miss you
But this visit has been nice
And we’ll meet like this next year
And remember, talk and smile
That Gretsch guitar looks quite familiar
Is that you, Alice Fay, come to deliver
Some cheesy gifts you bought with collected pennies
Except the LP you picked out at JC Penney
Well, you made the perfect choice once again
That’s what happens when two people
Are best friends
Well, I’ve had too many glasses
So I’ll stumble off to bed
But my dreams, they will be good ones
Of bandstands and baking bread
Each December I’ll make up a fire
And snuggle in my chair
And anticipate some company
With memories to share
