The Most Important Thing
The Most Important Thing

It’s getting too easy to think, as I sit here stuck in traffic,
that the most important thing is that I get to work on time
I’ve got deadlines coming up, I can’t get any more behind.

And it’s getting too easy to think, as I lie awake at night,
that the most important thing is some things I didn’t do—
there’s a friend I didn’t call, although I know he wants me to.

But the truth is that while I have these gentle worries
others make a greater sacrifice.
Filled with a pride in this dream we call America
so strong they’d guard it with their lives.

It’s getting too easy to think, as I drive around this town,
that the most important thing, is to look out for myself--
have the things I want,
doing good by doing well.

And it’s getting too easy to think, as I plan out my future,
that the most important thing, is to take care of my own--
keep my children safe,
try to make a happy home.

But the truth is that while I have these gentle worries
others make a greater sacrifice.
Filled with a pride in this dream we call America
so strong they’d guard it with their lives.

And so I’m taking this time to remember
those who served with honor through the years.
Those still among us who have given so much and
those whose memories glisten in our tears.

Instrumental

And I know I will go on with all my gentle worries,
but I never will forget their sacrifice,
or their faith in this dream we call America,
or what they gave of the best years of their lives.

That’s the most important thing,
that’s the most important thing.
That’s the most important thing,
that’s the most important thing.
