Years ago, Ralph Stanley spoke of recording a tribute album to two of his musical heroes, the duo of G. B. Grayson and Henry Whitter. Grayson was a gifted fiddler with, according to one admirer, a “smokey tone” to his playing. Songs that he and Whitter recorded in the late 1920s showed up in the repertoires of a number of bluegrass bands, including the Stanley Brothers, and later Ralph Stanley. Classics such as “Train 45,” “Little Maggie,” “Don’t Go Out Tonight,” and Ralph’s signature old-time banjo tune “Shout Little Lulie” originated with the Grayson and Whitter duo. Short Life Of Trouble is Ralph’s long-held vision for a tribute to the pair and the dozen songs and tunes that Ralph selected are lovingly replicated under his care.
