Question: Many of your songs speak of loneliness. Are you a lonely person?

Answer: “I don’t think I've been any more lonely than anyone else, although if you grow up in West Texas there’s a lot of ways to be lonely in West Texas. I wrote Only The Lonely in a car outside the house because we didn’t have enough room inside the house, so I wrote it in the car and that was a lonely situation to write in. Writing is an alone kind of thing. I don’t know, I think maybe because the first million seller was Only the Lonely that people think that I’ve been lonelier than some others, you know?”
