I knew several folks who fought the Dude Fire - Jeff Hatch was one of the Perryville crew that survived, listening to the screams of those around him who did not make it. Two prisoners actually left their fire shelters to help out a guard who was struggling with hers - all three died. Jeff's mom Judy asked me to write this song, and to help bring attention to a pretty heartless DOC policy in Arizona that used convict labor to fight fires, but provided no health coverage past their normal release date for any convicts injured. Proud to say our little grassroots campaign worked, and those policies have now been changed.
