The industrial disease known as Brown Lung destroyed not just the lungs but the lives of hundreds of thousands of cotton mill workers in the American South and around the world. While years of organizing by the Carolina Brown Lung Association succeeded in cleaning up the mills and winning compensation for some of those permanently disabled by the disease, nothing could ever compensate for the loss of loved ones.
