“Coxey’s Army” was an 1894 march to Washington DC by unemployed workers to demand that the government create a program of public works jobs. In 1985, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher broke a major strike by British coal miners, throwing thousands out of work. The tune for the line “for the black-faced miner” is taken from the old traditional ballad “The Dark-Eyed Sailor.”
