Invisible Fire
Invisible Fire by Payson Lyon
Face of an angel mind of a scamp
Artfully dodging society’s stamp
Learning life’s rules and how he should act
But never quite taking it all in as fact
“My favorite things+, he once smiled and said
“are drinking and eating and going to bed”
He spoke so intently with light in his eye
I thought “How will he ever get by?”
With invisible fire something inside
Easy to feel, so easy to hide
Lighting the way with constant desire
Invisible fire
Coming up in his world it didn’t take long
To discover one truth and coming out strong
To try all the big city carnival rides
That leave nothing undone and nothing inside
A caring crusader a young man on the rise
Of a monkey led satyr living well-crafted lies
Performing but trapped in a circling parade
I thought: “How will he end this charade?”
With invisible fire so wild and free
While all about us battles all about me
A flame eating both like a high voltage wire
Invisible fire
Rising and falling starting then stalling
No angel’s been there before
Facing the choices spoken in voices
Of angels and demons met too many times to ignore
Strange how it is as an outer light goes
Sometimes from within another light grows
Fed by that passion long since aflame
Just shifting direction no need for a name
From a passing encounter to a long hoped for friend
To a true lifetime lover to a path without end
That light that I saw long ago when he smiled
It never abandoned the child
Invisible Fire
Lighting the way joining as one
Yet each day to day coming into their own
Reaching out to inspire with invisible fire
Coming into his own reaching out to inspire
With invisible fire
