Sugarloaf Road
Sugarloaf Road by Payson Lyon

Over the rails where the grass lies flat
The diesels sound and the girls call back
As a boy I walked in the afternoon
Where the houses stand in a row
Just a crossroads town on the L & N line
Half a honeysuckle and kudzu vine
But for miles around there were stories told
‘Bout the houses on Sugarloaf Road

And it’s soon, and it’s soon I’ll be walking down Sugarloaf Road
And it’s soon, and it’s soon I’ll be walking down Sugarloaf Road

Though it’s buried deep I remember well
The hot summer nights and the dime store smell
The come-on smiles and hearts of gold
In those houses on Sugarloaf Road

But I grew up dogging that Southern heat
So I tipped my hat to those small town streets
The midnight specials and noontime treats
Said goodbye to Sugarloaf Road

And it’s soon, and it’s soon I’ll be walking down Sugarloaf Road
And it’s soon, and it’s soon I’ll be walking down Sugarloaf Road

Bought a one-way ticket for points unknown
Got drop-kicked and busted east of San Antone
And when my Sugarloaf mama sent me bus fare home
I pushed north and let the dice roll

I ate concrete, caught the Detroit blues
But I found out paying my big town dues
That I’d learned everything I had to know
In the houses on Sugarloaf Road

And it’s soon, and it’s soon I’ll be walking down Sugarloaf Road
And it’s soon, and it’s soon I’ll be walking down Sugarloaf Road
