Paula Maya's songwriting draws from her diverse and rich musical influences. Besides being a prolific songwriter and a bi-lingual singer with an unmistakable voice, she is a gifted keyboardist. She studied classical piano at the Brazilian Federal University of Music and graduated from the Brazilian Conservatory in music theory. However it was with the legendary pianist / arranger Luizinho Eca, who took Paula under his wings, that she was exposed to the wonders of Jazz, harmony and improvisation. Of course, being a native of Rio de Janeiro, the diversity of Brazilian music styles, such as Bossa-Nova, Samba, Baiao and MPB, is in her blood. But it was after she moved to the US in 1993, first to Houston TX then to Seattle WA, that she fell in love with Rock, Pop, Reggae, Afro-Pop, Ska and Country-Americana.
In Rio she started her performing and teaching music career. There she had the privilege to share the stage with artists such as Caetano Veloso, Leila Pinheiro and Djavan. In Seattle she studied vocal technique with the re-Known Maestro David Kyle and with Seattle Opera singer Steve Wall. She also co-hosted the Brazilian music radio show Raizes on KBCS 91.3fm for 12 years. She's been touring the US for the last several years, and her band has opened for and/or shared the stage with: The Presidents of the United States of America, Tab Benoit, Cyril Neville (Neville Brothers), Vinicius Cantuaria, and many more.
Paula Maya moved to the US to develop her career as a recording artist. Since then she started her own record label Yellow House Records and released 4 albums of original music. Maya has also been featured in several music compilations.
