Rock of Ages
Rock of Ages (Time 2:56)
Rock of Ages was written in 1763 by Reverend Augustus Toplady. It is believed that Toplady drew his inspiration for Rock of Ages from an incident while traveling along a gorge. He was suddenly caught by a bad storm, and took shelter within the gorge. While waiting for the storm to subside, he huddled by a rock and scribbled down the initial lyrics.
My Approach to Recording Rock of Ages
This is a beautiful hymn that combines a very slow tempo along with a very powerful refrain/chorus. My plan was to use harmonies to accentuate the chorus and also modest instrumentation to maintain flow. Overall the approach was simply to allow Toplady’s music itself do the main work.
