Angels We Have Heard on High (Instrumental)
Angels We Have Heard on High (Time: 2:22)
This is a hymn that was written over two-thousand years! The chorus of the music dates way back to 130AD when the phrase “Gloria in excelsis Deo” was a chant that became popular during the Christmas season.
Much later on, during Medieval times a Latin chorale inspired a more complete French version titled “Les Anges dans nos Campagnes” which commemorates the story of the birth of Jesus as found in the Gospel of Luke. And in 1882, a Roman Catholic Bishop-James Chadwick translated the French version to English. After a few adjustments, the music became “Angels We Have Heard on High”-the Christmas hymn as we know it today.
My Approach to Recording Angels We Have Heard on High
Beyond all else, I was looking for a “light” approach during the verses but could build subtly during the Gloria. So I used the guitar (no surprise there), but the banjo also which might seem an odd choice but is able to provide a totally different voice than guitar.
