About Paul Ryan
My music career can best be described as a “multi-decadal bridge” between the traditional folk music of the 60’s to contemporary acoustic country & Americana music of today. Old protest songs have been replaced by storytelling, and a more “country” feel. The long neck banjo has been replaced with the more driving three-finger style. And instruments like a second guitar or autoharp are replaced with the dobro, or mandolin.
With a background in both eras, I take elements of each in my songwriting and playing. During the 1960’s as a (very) young man I was a member of a Toronto-based group that played many venues ranging from high-schools, to the Grand Ole Opry (at Ryman) in Nashville and Massey Hall in Toronto. During the 1970’s I began a career in business, but the music was never far away and I returned in the early 2000’s. Since then, with a focus on writing songs and eight albums (six with all-original songs; two specialty/traditional), I hope to continue to create music with a strong acoustic country flavor.

Ryantunes.com, a Unique Music Website
It’s no secret that music delivery today is vastly different than only a few years ago. With some exceptions hard copy CD’s are being replaced by online streaming and other services. With some exceptions, the product is delivered to consumers digitally, and the packaging is on a screen, rather than hard copy. As a result many musician websites tend to serve a promotional function-for an album or upcoming tour. Ryantunes does this as well, but with some major variations.
Ryantunes Approach
When we began to develop the website, I wanted it to be mainly content-driven, unique, user-friendly, and make the music available to interested people at no cost. Risky yes, but my years in business taught me that if a product is good, the numbers follow. And where there are sufficient numbers, generating revenue is a biproduct, and can be established in a variety of ways. Its very early in the Ryantunes process, but I believe we are on the way to having accomplished that.
Behind the Scenes
A second area that makes Ryantunes.com unique is the material on the website designed to assist for (fellow) indie musicians. Anyone who has experienced the ‘school of hard knocks’, is often excited to pass on what they have learned to others. Specifically-for any musician looking to expand into a lateral area of the music business, it can seem like an intimidating maze. Maybe a songwriter wants to cut a professional demo, or a guitarist wants to write songs.
Through research and personal experience, I have created the “Behind the Scenes” segment at the website, and the first installment is entitled the Creative Depot Series. This series is comprised of 26 videos-each covering a topic in creating a song. The series begins by looking at the very beginning of music, then on to songwriting- from the first germ of an idea then through the process (I use) for arranging and recording to achieve a mix-ready professional recording. The series is available at www.ryantunes.com and also You Tube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJHBZlNG-myqSaJsAN6MGsQ)
