Blind Boy Fuller (real name Fulton Allen) gravitated to Durham from north-central South Carolina, and polished his guitar playing under yet to be ordained Blind Gary Davis. Davis seems to have shown most every picker in the city a thing or two, but Fuller was good enough that they’re hard to distinguish on record. Davis grudgingly conceded that Fuller ‘would have been all right if he had stayed under me a bit longer’, but Fuller had other plans. By applying Davis’s lessons to the naughty lyrics he was eminently capable of writing, he came to be the popular definition of a Piedmont style Bluesman. That’s what this song is about…
