Old Devil
12. Old Devil[b/] 3:50
This song was written and first recorded by Armentia Chatmon, aka Bo Carter. Bo was behind the Mississippi Sheiks, his own solo career, as well as the music of countless other Black Artists in the 20's and 30's. The structure of this tune is idiosyncratic and ahead of/ behind its time, considering your frame of reference. I consider it one of the earliest recorded examples of what would become known as the Hill Country Blues style, i.e. rhythmic first, focusing on a droning one chord verse structure culminating in a crooked and unrestrained resolution. This is not 12 bar Blues.
