This Sacred Black tune was ubiquitous across Black Religious traditions in the North and South pre-war. It goes by many names including 'Back, Back Hearse,' and others. It has been recorded in countless arrangements including Rev. Gary Davis' gorgeous and complex pianistic rendition. My version is based on Mississippi Fred and Annie Lee McDowell's, and is as primal and simple as necessary in order to deliver the powerful message. Catch the ghost, let the West African ancestors speak through you.
