Down On Me
I think this was the first song we recorded and the girls hadn't arrived yet, so Ketch Secor and I were going to just do it. Then Ann McCrary showed up and so, on the recording, it's Ann, Ketch and I doing the singing. The version we worked off of was by Odetta, although our version is nothing like hers. In fact, it bears no resemblance to hers at all. I think Ketch and I just started riffing and came up with this version. I think the verses may be amalgamations of old verses because I can't seem to find a true direction from verse to verse. I just know that the song makes me feel better than I did before I heard it. Eric Holt played a wonderful piano solo and Gil Landry played such great dobro on this song. I really want to do a true pre-war style blues record at some point.
