WRONG TRAIL BLUES

I’M WALKIN DOWN A RAILROAD BED
THINKING OF AN IMPERFECT RHYME
PAST A BROKEN WINDOW ON AN EMPTY SHED
I CAN’T TOW THE PARTY LINE
I’VE GOT NOTHING IN MY POCKET
BUT I GOT PLENTY ON MY MIND

THE TRACKS HAVE LONG BEEN LIFTED UP
NO TRAINS ARE COMING ‘ROUND
THERE WON’T BE ANY WHISTLE
NO PLAINTIVE LONELY SOUND
NO LIGHTS UP IN THE DISTANCE
JUST ROTTED TIES UPON THE GROUND

I LEFT MY KEYS IN MY CAR AND MY WALLET
ON THE FLOOR
I LEFT MY MEMORY IN A ROOM
DOWN AT THE JERSEY SHORE
I HAD A HEAD FULL OF IDEAS
BUT THEY DON’T MATTER ANYMORE

I PULLED UP IN A HEARSE AND
AND FLEW OUT ON A PLANE
I SAW THE DR. AND THE NURSE
BUT THEY COULDN’T FIND THE PAIN
THERE ARE PLENTY CLAIMING CREDIT
BUT NOBODY OWNS THE BLAME

THERE’S SOMEONE SELLING WATER
WHILE THE SHIP IS GOING DOWN
THERE’S A MULE IN THE STALL
OF SOME FOOL’S BEEN MADE A CLOWN
FROM A DISTANCE IT LOOKS PEACFUL
BUT THERE’S TREACHERY IN TOWN

IM WALKING DOWN THE RAILROAD BED
THE TRACKS ARE LONG GONE
NO I DON’T BELIEVE THIS WORLD
NEEDS ANOTHER RAILROAD SONG
IT'S so HARD TO FIGURE OUT
THE TIME AND PLACE WHERE I BELONG

THERE’S A BONE ON THE GROUND
IT’S BEEN BLEACHED WHITE BY THE SUN
DID IT DIE A NATURAL DEATH
OR AT THE WRONG END OF A GUN
IM STILL TRYING TO DETERMINE
WAS IT EVER ANYONE

I’VE GOT MY EYES IN MY POCKET
AND MY HANDS UP ON THE WHEEL
IM HOLDING STEADY AS THE SUN SETS
OVER UNFAMILIAR TRAILS
DID YOU EVER STOP TO WONDER
WHAT YOU MIGHT WANT FOR YOUR LAST MEAL
