I’ve ridden the rails all of my life. Sometimes I feel like I’m “Rollin’ Nowhere”, even when I’ve got a known destination. “Rollin Nowhere” was inspired by my lifetime of riding across America on passenger trains. People who love to ride trains understood the phrase, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey” long before it came into vogue. When I ride a train, I feel like time is sort of suspended, and I’m in a different dimension. It’s sort of the ultimate songwriter’s experience. I always feel like writing when I’m on a train. Far-flung travel by train is such an American thing, and a Western kind of feeling. I’ve spent several summers playing my music on top of La Veta pass at a spectacular amphitheater built by the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, and it’s a dream come true. When I’m on a train in the Rocky Mountains, singing and looking out the window, or listening to the lonesome whistle come around the curve, I’m in paradise.
