Three Cows and Two Horses
Three cows and two horses, I had to draw water
From a hand dug sixty foot well
Three cows and two horses drank more than a camel
I cranked all that water, still feel the wood handle

The well would go dry if my dad didn’t clean it
We dropped him down there with a tub and a rope
There’s close to the earth, boys, and there’s down below
But that’s where you go when you’re poor and you know

I’d get up of a morning at daylight and plow
The five-acre field in the cold
And then take a wagon to Harriston school
Three miles across gravel, pulled by a mule

I’d get dropped at the store, get home around four
Change into work clothes and go plow some more
There’s close to the earth, boys, and there’s down below
But that’s where you go when you’re poor and you know

Three cows and two horses, I had to draw water
From a hand-dug sixty foot well
Three cows and two horses, not many remember
But I’m still around here to tell
