This fifth song in the Sam Davis cycle finds an older Sam hunting in the woods after years of preaching from Sam’s Throne. Sam explains now he’s come to trust in providence and quiet his mind in the wilderness. He’s become more comfortable with the uncertainties of life. As he shares his mind with us he hears a voice calling for a lost cow. He follows the voice and is reunited with his sister. To me, this song shows a turn from a youthful, idealism to an experienced, pragmatic mindset that is more comfortable with mystery. Sam hasn’t lost faith so much as he’s let go of the need for control.
