Aaron Smith & the Coal Biters - Dead Man’s Hollow
Word was they found him
Forty feet from a cave
He could have passed the night there
Warm enough and plenty safe
Word was that homes along the way
Closed their doors
To the man from God knows where
With a face full of sores
But it’s warm by the fire tonight
Sons and daughters
Grow sleepy by the flickering light
Say your prayers
And pull those blankets tight children
It’s gonna be a cold one
No one knew where he came from
No one took the time to ask
They just came to the door with a shotgun
Set him back on his path
No one offered him a blanket
No one gave a plate of food
They didn’t know that he was hungry
No one asked
So no one knew
Old Murphy was the one who found him
Curled up like a dog
Had to leave and bring his boys back with him
They dug him a grave
Right next to where he lay
They used their shovel blades to tip him in
And finally covered him
Never know what folks are carryin’
These days
And it’s warm by the fire tonight
Sons and daughters
Grow sleepy by the flickering light
Say your prayers
And pull those blankets tight children
It’s gonna be a cold one
Word was they found him
Forty feet from a cave
He could have passed the night
There warm enough and plenty safe
