This song is the second in three about the journey of the Martin Family. While on The Trail of Tears Henri’s daughter Hazel falls in love with a soldier. This soldier was Jack Evans and his love for Hazel extended even to helping her entire family escape the Trail to the wilds of Newton County. The entire family was in an incredibly precarious situation and Jack sacrificed his own standing in the world to help them all survive. It’s a rare love that does that.
