Larry Cordle Releases New Single “Cherokee Fiddle”

Songwriter – Michael Martin Murphey

Nashville, Tenn. (August 7, 2020) Larry Cordle has released the third single, “Cherokee Fiddle” from his upcoming new album, Where The Trees Know My Name. “This song was written by the legendary singer-songwriter and artist, Michael Martin Murphey and is part of the soundtrack of my younger days,” said Cordle.
Michael Martin Murphey just heard the song and said, “Love it! Although my original version of my song was not recorded pure Bluegrass style by me or Johnny Lee, I wrote it as a Bluegrass song. I did a Bluegrass version of it on my album Buckaroo Bluegrass many years later, but no other versions are as good as Larry Cordle’s. Larry Cordle captures the Bluegrass soul of the song perfectly! I feel honored that the Bluegrass family of artists still considers me a part of the family; thank you Brother Larry Cordle.”
“Some of you will remember the great Johnny Lee recording, from the soundtrack of Urban Cowboy in 1980. When it first came out, I was so infatuated not only with the story but also the great melody that Michael had woven the story around. I just fell in love with it and decided to work it up and sing it with the band I was in at the time, Homebrew. I was playing 6 nights a week with them at Lee’s Lounge in Winchester, Kentucky. For two years, six nights a week, I sang this song. When compiling songs for this upcoming album, I remembered how much I loved the song back then and realized I still loved it,” he continued. “Thanks so much to Michael Martin Murphey for such a great song. I am honored you have now heard it and like it!”
“Cherokee Fiddle” is now available to Radio Programmers at AirPlayDirect or request a private download link. The song is available for purchase now at larrycordle.com/music. Two other recent singles are also available for streaming and purchase: “Breakin’ on the Jimmy Ridge” that reached #1 on the Bluegrass Today Top 20 Song Chart on December 20, 2019 and the second single “Sailor’s Regret” which also reached #1 earlier this summer 2020.
In February of this year, Cordle was honored with the 2020 SPBGMA Songwriter of the Year Award during the 46th Annual SPBGMA Bluegrass Music Awards Show. The eastern Kentucky native is also a Grammy-winning artist, multi-IBMA award-winner and member of the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.

Larry Cordle Release New Single Sailor's Regret
Larry Cordle has released the second single, “Sailor’s Regret” from his upcoming new album, Where The Trees Know My Name. The song was written by bluegrass artist and songwriter Johnny Williams. “Having an artist record your song is great but having a songwriter like Larry Cordle put my song on his album is quite an honor,” said Williams.

Cordle was thrilled about cutting the song saying, “My friend Johnny Williams wrote this great song. My good buddy, band mate and banjo player extraordinaire, Jody King, suggested it to me when I was gathering songs for this new album. Being a former Navy guy myself, I just loved the tale. The longing for home when I was overseas, sometimes nearly unbearable, coupled with the great drive Johnny put into this piece made it a no brainer for me to cut. Thank you old buddy for allowing me to record your great song.”

“Sailor’s Regret” is now available to Radio Programmers at AirPlayDirect or request a private download link. The song will soon be available for streaming and purchase. In the meantime, you can download or stream the first single “Breaking on the Jimmy Ridge” that reached #1 on the Bluegrass Today Top 20 Song Chart on December 20, 2019. The fun tune was written by Larry Cordle and Larry Shell.

Cordle just received the 2020 SPBGMA Songwriter of the Year Award during the 46th Annual SPBGMA Bluegrass Music Awards Show held in Nashville last weekend. The eastern Kentucky native is also a Grammy-winning artist, multi-IBMA award-winner and member of the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.

On February 15, Cordle fans can catch his performance at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville as part of the Tyler Childers Country Squires Residency show. Every Sunday at 4pm, Cordle performs with Val Storey and Mike Rogers at the world-famous Station Inn in Nashville. Last month, they released a new gospel album, Sunday Gospel Sessions. The 13-track album is available for download through Amazon and iTunes. Every Monday night at 9:00pm, Cord performs at the Station Inn for New Mondays with Val Storey, Carl Jackson and friends.

Larry Cordle Releases New Single: Breakin' On The Jimmy Ridge
Larry Cordle has released a new single, “Breakin’ on the Jimmy Ridge” to radio. The fun tune was co-written by Cordle and songwriting pal Larry Shell and is the first single release from Cordle’s upcoming album releasing on Mighty Cord Records later this year. Radio programmers can download the song at AirPlayDirect.com or by request.
Cordle was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky. He is a Grammy-winning artist, multi-IBMA award-winner and member of the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. If you have ever had the opportunity to have a conversation with “The Mighty Cord,” you know he’s got a knack for storytelling which is evident by his award-winning original songs.
For “Breakin’ on the Jimmy Ridge” Cord explains where the song idea came from.
“The guy in the song, Raleigh Butler, ran an old country store in Blaine, Kentucky. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, called him Rawl. It was just as if it were too much effort to use his whole name. Over the years I have found out that folks, especially in Appalachia, tend to make up their own names, by the first sound that they hear.”
“When I was a kid many old men in and around the community where I was from, were practicing, amateur weathermen. They could predict the weather by the signs they observed. A black woolly worm meant a really cold winter. The same for a hornet's nest built low to the ground ... a sure sign of a bad winter. A ring around the moon was a sure sign of falling weather.”
“One constant, that any of these amateur weathermen used was, when storm systems came from the northwest and if the system hung together crossing the ridge line known as 'the Jimmy Ridge', it meant we were gonna get rained on. However, many of these systems did indeed break apart when crossing the ridge line, hence the saying, she's breakin' on the Jimmy Ridge. There was likely a scientific explanation for this, but the old-timers knew what they saw and had seen time and time again, so it became a regular topic when storms clouds arose from that direction. Of course, any time weather systems came from the south well.... even a rank amateur weatherman could predict that we were gonna get a frog strangler.”
“Just remembering these old sayings and recollections are what I used as a basis for the song. Most people won't know what the Jimmy Ridge is but folks from my neck of the woods will. Everyone still alive for miles in and around Lawrence County, Kentucky from the 1960s will remember Rawl Butler and Butler's General Store in Blaine, Kentucky. Other Appalachians who did not know Rawl, will plug in their own name there because amateur weathermen still abound in the Appalachian Mountains.”
The song will soon be available for streaming and purchase. Check for updates at www.larrycordle.com or his Facebook page.
