Early in their marriage, my father immigrated to the U.S., following my mother to her hometown of Duluth, MN, where they raised their family. Once or twice a year we would take the 13 hour road trip through the Great Lakes to spend holidays at my grandparent’s home in Aylmer, ON. As a kid, I relished the tradition and the things that made my family distinctly Canadian. As I grew, I came to understand that my dad questioned his sense of belonging and carried a guilty and hurt heart over the distance between us.
