A Battle She Just Couldn't Win
Last week in the late Sunday paper
An obituary caught my eye
Just then my heart filled with sadness
A girl I once loved had died
So I went to see her for the last time
We stood round her coffin and cried
But lying there in the casket
Was a girl I did not recognize

Her youth and beauty had faded
Wiped away by the smoke pills and gin
Dragged down by the life she created
And a battle she just couldn’t win

It didn’t seem that long ago
She was once the bell of the ball
Men all fell in love with her
She stood so pretty and tall
But she turned to drugs and the bottle
Went to places that she’d never been
Last week she finally hit bottom
And never come back again

Her youth and beauty had faded
Wiped away by the smoke pills and gin
Dragged down by the life she created
And a battle she just couldn’t win

Her youth and beauty had faded
Wiped away by the smoke pills and gin
Dragged down by the life she created
And a battle she just couldn’t win
And a battle she just couldn’t win
