Really Spring
If this were really spring and not just a thaw
I’d get out my colored pencils and set about to draw
For soon there would be flowers, soon there would be green
My yellows and my blues to match the greenest green I’ve seen
And I would draw the bird song returning fine and bright
I’d draw them from my memory if I lose my ear or sight
In spring some bend to sorrow, the remnants of a grief
Or maybe just the weight of time on the structures underneath
And I could walk the dirt roads and I will not fear for ice
Like the snow it’s all gone underground, boots to pay the muddy price
I will draw the world at morning coming out of night
I will draw the world the way it is but I’ll make it feel alright
If this were really spring and not just a tease
I’d declare our side the winner, me and winter on our knees (2x)
