A hoot owl was watching him all of his life
They tried with a pistol, got close with a knife
But it was not a fight that brought Brushy Bill down
Just a wide open desert far away from the town

When he rode Lincoln County he was reckless and hard
Laughed at the cheaters and threw back their cards
He was true to his friends though it cost him his name
rode out for vengeance, instead he found fame

Now he camps all alone on the desert at night
When the mail plane flies over he watches the lights
Dreams of the old times, the things that he did
When Brushy Bill Roberts was Billy the Kid

When the law of the land is corrupted and sold
When truth is worth less than a handful of gold
You can quit and keep ridin', turn coward and hide
Or run with the outlaws and fight for your pride

They cheated young Billy, ambushed his friend
Shot down old man Tunstall who had taken him in
So he fought them until he was locked behind bars
Shot his way free and he fought them some more

Now he camps all alone on the desert at night
When the mail plane flies over he watches the lights
Dreams of the old times, the things that he did
When Brushy Bill Roberts was Billy the Kid

The State hired Pat Garrett to bring Billy in
Both rode for John Chisum, where they became friends
Pat swore that he found him, hew swore that he died
And the oldtimers swear now that Pat Garrett lied

So out on the wasteland lives a crazy old man
His companions are dead, all he has is the land
He wanders, remembers, and holds up his end
By concealing his name and the lie of a friend

Now he camps all alone on the desert at night
When the mail plane flies over he watches the lights
Dreams of the old times, the things that he did
When Brushy Bill Roberts was Billy the Kid

Now he camps all alone on the desert at night
When the mail plane flies over he watches the lights
For a dead friend's good name he still keeps the truth hid
Old Brushy Bill Roberts was Billy the Kid
