Jim Pipkin's Rollin the Dice was inspired by several young and ambitious hopefuls he met on his trips to Nashville from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. The song took almost twenty years from concept to final recording, in many ways mirroring the long journey so many experience trying to make a dent in the music business.

Country's come to the city
Cardboard suitcase in hand
Young and wild, tough and pretty
Got a dream and a plan

It takes a whole lotta no place left to go
To bet your life on a song
It would be just like playing the Lotto
If the odds weren't so long

Rollin the dice
Drawin to an inside straight
She don't play nice
Unless nice is what it takes

This town is full of lovers and leavers
They're a source of endless surprise
Wannabes and overachievers
Swap telephone numbers and lies

She's waiting tables every evening
Down in the Bluebird Cafe
Plays wherever she can get in
Sings her heart out for free

Rollin the dice
Drawing to an inside straight
She don't play nice
Unless nice is what it takes

Some peoples dreams come true so easy
Could it be they're dreaming too small
She's never been one to settle
Always got to go for it all

Country's come to the city
Looks like she's come here to stay
Young and wild, tough an pretty
By God she'll make it one day

Rollin the Dice
Drawin to an inside straight
She don't play nice
Unless nice is what it takes
