Lyrics:
I was born a coal miner’s son
We didn’t have much money, but we sure had some fun
Running up the mountains and playing in the creeks
Oh, that chilly water made for rosy cheeks
Grandpa would say “You kids are gonna catch a cold or flu”
But if we did I’ll tell you, no one ever knew

I remember Grandpa just like it was yesterday
He’d sit on the front porch and rock the day away
Chewing his tobacco and spitting it on the lawn
He’d watch us kids run and play all around the farm
Sitting on the front porch until the sun was gone

I remember the year was ‘63
The year he passed away and I was 23
It came ahead and snowed about a foot or so
The snow was on the mountains and four wheels couldn’t go
So we came up with a plan, like Grandpa used to say
And we carried him to the cemetery on a horse and sleigh

I remember Grandpa just like it was yesterday
He’d sit on the front porch and rock the day away
Chewing his tobacco and spitting it on the lawn
He’d watch us kids run and play all around the farm
Sitting on the front porch until the sun was gone
Sitting on the front porch until the sun was gone
