Sounds of War
In the spring of 1953
Lil’ sis ran off for fun
Down a winding path she ran
With a friend near Sugar Run
One climbed up and o’er a fence
Like many times before
But lil’ sis crossed crawling on the ground
And heard the sounds of war
CHORUS
With her ear pressed tightly to the ground
She heard horses running by
Cannons fire and wagons roll
Heard men before they died
Was he a Yankee, or a Rebel
Was he a father, was he a son
The sounds of war in Lee County
Are buried in the ground
When lil’ sis stood up the world was still
And she spoke not a word
She ran off breathless to her friend
And asked if she heard
“Heard what?”, the friend asked laughingly
‘Cause she hadn’t heard a sound
But sister knew just what she heard
Ghosts wailing in the ground
REPEAT CHORUS
