Mississippi John Hurt is the one musician I most regret never having had a chance to meet. His music brims over with his gentle, lovable personality. For years, I had no idea Hurt’s “Richlands Women Blues” referred to Richlands,
Virginia, near where I live in Southwest Virginia. The song words were sent to Hurt by William Evert Myer of Richlands, Virginia, when Myer was trying to promote his Lonesome Ace record label in the 1920s. “Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me” was also written by Myer. Hurt set both those songs to music.
