Raye Zaragoza - Still Here
4. Still Here - I’ve been re-connecting to my indigeneity and spending more time on the land from where my family is descended. I grew up in predominantly white neighborhoods and schools, and always felt very disassociated from my Indigenous identity. Over the past decade, I’ve been learning more about who I am as an Indigenous woman and coming to terms with the painful colonization that my grandparents experienced. “Still Here” is about acknowledging that Indigenous people are still here, and Indigenous artists and creators are thriving in so many different ways. Indigenous people are not one definition, and many of us are mixed race and on a journey to reclaim ourselves. “When you can’t hold it together, I hope you remember, we’re still here.” I’ve had some dark moments throughout the past five years, and it’s my Indigenous sisters that have always picked me up and reminded me of who I am. This song is also about sisterhood, and camaraderie and being there for eachother in a world that has tried so hard to erase us.
