I Knew What to Do
I saw it in the summer sky
I watched the sun bow down his golden head
And softly hand the story
Of his pride and all of his glory
To the moon

The moon was bright and dignified
And when we sang her praise
She cast it aside
So all I could see
Was you

So when your heart stopped yearning for mine
And I knew we’d run out of time
Believe me, I’ve never felt so blue
But I knew what to do

I heard it in the autumn breeze
The voice of wisdom, not without regret
Saying, “What can be wrong with October?
There is beauty in life that is over,
Too.”

Out on a field of glistening snow
So bittersweet when mud began to show
The world held unshakable faith
That it was only a matter of days
Til the bloom

So when your heart stopped yearning for mine
And I knew we’d run out of time
Believe me, I’ve never felt so blue
But I knew what to do
